The rally isn’t just about us – it’s a great opportunity to do some good in the world. And you can help us do good in few ways:
Donate to Redkite
The Australian charity we are backing is Redkite, a leading organisation supporting children with cancer and their family.
Currently there are approximately 8000 families affected by childhood and adolescent cancer in Australia. Redkite is there with real and practical support for the whole family from the moment of diagnosis, throughout treatment and when families return home to the community.
Red kite receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of the community to provide these important services.
Red kite’s support services include
Financial assistance – includes grants to help with expenses and financial counselling
Emotional support – within the hospital environment is provided through social workers and music therapists
Community support – includes telephone and email counselling, bereavement support and family days.
Education assistance
they’ll even sort out the tax receipt for you.
Donate to Lotus Children’s Centre
In 2012 the official Mongol Rally charity is the Lotus Children’s Centre Charitable Trust.
They work with vulnerable children and families to provide the basic human rights of shelter, food and education. LCCT care for up to 150 abused, orphaned and abandoned children at any one time.
Initially set up to provide basic needs for survival for just a handful of children in one apartment, Lotus has developed a kindergarten and a primary school to provide educational foundation, and is developing vocational pathways for employment opportunities.
LCCT receive very limited financial support from Mongolian authorities.
Lotus runs two guest houses in Ulaanbaatar, which we will be staying in upon our arrival to Ulaanbaatar.
The guest houses are named in this years’ edition of The Lonely Planet as being amongst the four “best places to stay in Ulaanbaatar”.
Donate to the team
Despite our ranting on the granny car rally style, driving the distance requires a decent vehicle and more so when looking at the areas we will be crossing.
The car will be donated to Mongolian Charities on arrival, so we want to make sure that when we arrive, we won’t leave an absolute wreck not worth a penny. This would cost more for the charities in custom duties and paperwork than the money they would get from selling the car.
We have now shortlisted a couple of candidates which we hope will take us all the way to the finish line but now we need to pay it off and do few modifications to ensure we can make it to Ulaanbaatar.
Couple of items are also to be included:
- New tyres rally tip no.1
- Many Jerrycans
- Spare parts
- Survival gear
- Tins and tins of baked beans
It all costs money. And that’s on top of thousand of dollars we paid for all the visas and the extra thousands for the petrol.
This type of donation isn’t quite charity (money goes straight to the team), but it does impact our ability to undertake the trip the most. Help us turn our dream into a reality, and contribute to pimping up the car and bring it to Mongolia!
